Can I become a lawyer in Canada if I graduated from an American law school?
I’m an American undergrad student who really wants to immigrate to Canada one day. I’m also interested in practicing law, so if I decide to go to law school in the US, will I be able to use my degree in Canada? And how difficult is it to immigrate to Canada? I can speak some French – will that help me in terms of immigrating?
Check into reciprocity laws.
Just like in the US, some states you can practice in other states, whereas in others, would have to take the bar exam in that state to practice.
I believe in the states of CA and FL, are not reciprocal since there is a glut of lawyers there and this is to discourage lawyers from moving there and practicing, unless they take the bar exam. I remember years ago while in Florida saw so many signs about all of these para-legals and the reason was that they were actually lawyers, but since did not take the bar exam in Florida, could not legally practice law, so became para-legals.
Most likely you would need to pass the law exam in Canada. Why not call a lawyer in Canada and ask?
good luck
