When I first came to the United States in 1978 I had no idea that I would be living here the rest of my life. As a British national I had to undergo a series of questions and background checks to help establish my residency in America, and after six months of working with an immigration lawyer, Miami government officials finally allowed me to apply for permanent resident alien status. Even though I was only a child I was required to fill out the same documents and be subjected to the same FBI fingerprinting and screenings as my parents were. I even had my own FBI file complete with a photo and current address in America where I could be contacted.
After I received my green card I was able to file an application for a social security number. Again with the aid of an immigration lawyer, Miami representatives of the Federal Government were able to issue the paperwork that I needed to legally be employed and pay taxes once I turned 16. Although it was not until many years later that I decided to become a naturalized US Citizen, I found that by hiring an attorney, who knows the current laws and rights of the individual, was I able to process the necessary forms and become an adopted American. Even with legal help, it took close to one year from the time that I first submitted my application for naturalization to the time that my court date was scheduled to cut through the bureaucratic red tape and again be fingerprinted, interviewed, and complete another extensive FBI background check before I was given permission to be sworn in as a citizen of the United States and surrender my resident alien status permanently.
