My husband paid an immigration lawyer to file his application and represent him at the hearing. I ended up doing all of the paperwork myself, the lawyer just signed it as legal representation and mailed it. So in actuality, we paid $1200 for nothing more than a half hour consultation, a signature, and a stamp.
I’ll give you the advice I got from an immigration officer when my husband was going through the process: If you have a legitimate basis for filing an application and being awarded residency, you do NOT need a lawyer…they can’t do anything that you can’t do yourself. If you don’t have a legitimate claim, whether you have a lawyer or not, you’ll still be denied. And you know which category you fall into already…
